ALEXANDER, P. F [ ecit ](Dutch). Signature found on a medal executed in honour of the poet and historian John Baptist Houwaart, who at the time had attained unusual celebrity. Bolzenthal says that the portrait on this medal betrays a bold master-hand, and does great credit to the artist, who flourished during the latter part of the sixteenth century in Holland. ALEXAS (Greek). Gem-engraver. The Brit. Museum possesses a fragment of a cameo on which figures a hippocamp, a type copied from Greek coins. Alexas had two sons, Aulus and Quintus, who both distinguished themselves in the glyptic art. ALEXEJEFF, BASILE VLADIMIROWITCH (Russ.). Born in 1823, died in 1881. Son of the Medallist Vladimir Alexejeff. He received his education at the Technical Mining School attached to the Technological Institute at St. Petersburg, and entered the Mint in 1845 as Medal-engraver. ALEXEJEFF, VLADIMIR EPHRAIMOWITCH (Russ.) 1784-1832. He entered the St. Petersburg Mint in 1801 to learn engraving, and in 1805 was promoted to the position of Medallist, on account of his success and artistic achievements.
